My art diary...

I would love to have you follow along on my journey.

New (to me) painting medium.

Sometimes you need to change it up and challenge yourself.

I wasn't getting the look I wanted working with Acrylic paint so I decided to explore Alkyd Oil paint.
The difference between traditional oil paint and alkyd is that the alkyd paint is formulated to dry much more rapidly.  The next day, the work is dry which seems to be a perfect fit with the way I like to work.
I, thankfully, have a lot of commissions and my clients are excited to to see the portrait. Also, there is sometimes a special occasion the owner wants to commemorate.  Having a painting take months to dry does not work!
Visit again soon to see some of the new creations in alkyd oil. Thanks.

Something different, a painting!

Sometimes I see an image and it just grabs my imagination.  It needs to be painted.
I was logged on to Boykin Spaniel Lovers Facebook page and there was such a photo.

Of course you just don't snatch someone's work and go, so I reached out to the owner, and he is a delight.
I have permission to paint using his photo as inspiration and I plan to have some prints of the painting made so a portion of the proceeds can go to Boykin Rescue.  Fun for me, great exposure, and helping a rescue. What could be better?

This is the image. I will post progress so you can see how a painting develops.  Thanks Lance for the use of your gorgeous photo.

Sometimes the details are a real challenge. Look at all those little white hairs!

Base Pencil Sketch of "The Grand Dog"

9/1/2016

It all starts with a light pencil sketch to get form and shadow.
I have to be careful not to get too aggressive with the color because the paper needs to accept many layers of color and the pencils have a lot of pigment and some binders that make erasing difficult.

Lots of people have grand dogs.  This little guy is a surprise Christmas gift for someone in Rhode Island.
I am calling him Connie's grand dog. I'll do the preliminary sketch and post the beginning stage.
Hope you follow along!

Thanks so much to Lynne Brown of Boykin Spaniel Rescue for her patience with a digitally challenged artist. The term "rescue" must be her middle name.
The feedback on the site has been wildly positive. Clean, loads fast, etc. Everything I wanted!

Lady, I owe you, big time..
